Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is a cult classic that flew under the radar, in no small part due to its lackluster level of polish when it launched. Fan support over the years has tuned up and added onto the original game, making mods an almost-essential part of the Bloodlines experience, and now they’re becoming Bloodlines pseudo-canon.
A new version of the quintessential, “unofficial” fan patch by Werner Spahl, or “Wesp5,” went live today on ModDB, and alongside it came another surprise: the first entry of an episodic prologue series, fan-made and leading into the events of the first Bloodlines game.
Developed by Wesp5 and two other modders, EntenSchreck and Hareishan, Bloodlines Prelude 1 is the first chapter of a Prelude mod where you take on the role of human, rather than an immortal being of the night. As a hunter for the Society of Leopold, the episodic mod will gradually lead into the events of the first Bloodlines.
While both the patch and the prelude are unofficial mods from Bloodlines fans, they still got a shoutout from Bloodlines 2 developer Hardsuit Labs on the official Bloodlines 2 account. They call the unofficial patch a “must” for both newcomers and Bloodlines fans, as it includes several pieces of new content including two unused musical pieces from the Bloodlines 1 soundtrack.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is a scruffy, fascinating RPG whose haunting atmosphere and still-relevant writing earned it a spot on our list of the top RPGs of all time. So if you’re new to the world of Vampire, or maybe you’re a Bloodlines fan bummed about the sequel’s delay, now’s a good time to reinstall and dive back into the Masquerade.
We won’t see Bloodlines’ sequel until later on in 2020, but in the meantime, be sure to check out our interview with Bloodlines 2 writer Cara Ellison about all things vampires, climate change, and the Masquerade.
