When most people think of LEGO they think of loudly building your cool stuff. Sometimes they think of the hugely successful LEGO games, such as LEGO Star Wars. However, it seems LEGO wants to change that with LEGO Builder’s Journey, which has launched on Apple Arcade.
Unlike most LEGO games, LEGO Builder’s Journey is a quiet puzzle game. You play as a little lego character who needs to reunite with their friend. To move the character around, you’ll have to find platforms to place little LEGO blocks for them to use. Naturally, you’ll need to build out solutions for yourself, as you can’t always rely on a path being available from the start. This is LEGO, after all, some building is going to be required.
Right away the game stands out with having a world entirely built from LEGO bricks and nothing else. Even the little effects are that of LEGOs. Bubbling mud has small brown LEGO bubbles that emerge from it, using pieces to craft a distinct visual effect. LEGO Builder’s Journey promises to be a “poetic puzzle”, and all the trailers make it look like it shares more in common with games like Journey than LEGO DC Super-Villains. It is, however, a rather fantastic break from the usual and is certainly an interesting way to take the toys.
This isn’t the first LEGO game available on Apple Arcade. The service also has LEGO Brawls, a 2.5d platform fighter where you’ll battle AI and other players to try and capture zones. The game has you using your custom build character to knock other players around and collect power-ups. It’s a little more in line with what most people think of when they think of a LEGO game these days.
LEGO Builder’s Journey is available exclusively on Apple Arcade. You can subscribe to Apple Arcade for $4.99 a month.
