Battleborn Removed from Stores, Servers Shutting Down in 2021

2K Games has announced that Battleborn will be closing its servers in January 2021

“Battleborn has been removed from digital storefronts,” stated 2K Games in its press release, “and we are now in the process of gradually sunsetting the game to focus our efforts and resources on other projects.”

While no changes will be coming to the game at current, the game will no longer sell premium currency after February 24th, 2020. The servers will then close on in January 2021. Virtual currency currently owned and bought will still remain in the account, and can still be earned in game and spent. However, once the servers shut down, even the game’s single-player campaign and peer-to-peer games will be unplayable.

Battleborn launched on May 3rd, 2016. Reviews were just above-average, and the game was quickly overshadowed by Overwatch (being a similar genre with more marketing behind it), which released on May 24th with a free-to-play week.

Player numbers then tanked to less than 1000 in July, and the game was soon heavily discounted. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick (2K Games parent company) reportedly stated that Battleborn had missed its sales target. “While the game launched to solid reviews, its performance in the market has been below our expectations.” Gearbox Software stopped updating the game in 2016.
