Paradox Interactive and Hardsuit Labs are eager to make a proper follow-up to Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, but the development team doesn’t want to rush the sequel out the door in a similar manner to the first game. Today, Hardsuit CEO Andy Kipling and lead narrative designer Brian Mitsoda announced that Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 will come out later in 2020 than the studio’s original target.
First announced in March of this year, Hardsuit is developing Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Bloodlines 2 is set 15 years after Troika Games’ original, and takes place in Seattle instead of Los Angeles. Mitsoda, who worked on the original Bloodlines as a designer and writer, is bringing his experience with the series to the sequel—including that of Bloodlines’ rocky 2004 launch.
“Although Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 will still launch in 2020, we have decided to value quality over making the Q1 launch window,” write Kipling and Mitsoda. “There’s the responsibility to avoid some of the issues that plagued the first game, which was famously launched too early. Over the last few months, it became clear that to stick to our original date would risk repeating that mistake.”
“This hasn’t been an easy- nor our first choice. Throughout 2019 we have been improving our processes and growing our teams, however it soon became clear that this alone won’t allow us to deliver the quality we want at the date we promised.”
The team behind Bloodlines 2 is clearly taking the task of following up the cult classic seriously. “We know the consequences of fucking this up,” creative director Martin Ka’ai Cluney told USG at the time of Bloodlines 2’s announcement.
Vampire: The Masquerade is also having a bit of a video games renaissance. In May, developers Big Bad Wolf announced an unrelated Vampire: The Masquerade narrative RPG. Draw Distance is aiming to release Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York, a visual novel take on the series, in Q4 of 2019 for the Switch and PC.
