It seems like the Borderlands series is one juggernaut that will just keep going. Today 2K has released a statement saying that the game has sold 5 million copies within 5 days of launch.
2K then went a little further to provide some extra statistics on this. For starters, it seems that Borderlands 3 is both the fastest selling title in 2K’s history, and their high selling title on PC. They also claim that, thanks to Borderlands 3, the franchise has now generated more than $1 billion in Net Bookings, and it is the second franchise 2K owns that has done so, with the first presumably being Civilization. Additionally, 2K also noted that 70% of the game’s sales were digital.
Naturally, some of the stuff 2K mentioned had to deal with the Epic Games Store, since Borderlands 3 is sold exclusively on it on PC. According to 2K, Borderlands 3 broke the pre-order record for the Epic Games Store, and also that “PC sales of the title through the Epic Games Store have been incredibly strong.”
In the press release David Ismailer, the president of 2K, had the following to say:
Borderlands 3’s incredibly successful launch is a result of the hard work and longstanding partnership between Gearbox Software and 2K. We are immensely grateful to everyone who played a role in making the Borderlands series the global, pop culture phenomenon that it is today, including hundreds of developers at Gearbox and many who have made this their life’s work. We also want to thank the Borderlands community. Mayhem does not happen by itself, and their passion for the series is what drives us to make each game an amazing experience.
In addition to the great sales, there’s also a solid chunk of streaming going on. The game has been in the top five of most-watched games on Twitch since launch, and has already produced 14 million hours of video streams in five days. According to 2K, this is a little over half what Borderlands 2 did in the 7 years since it launched.
Borderlands 3 is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. If you want to know more about the game you can read our review here.
