Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, the upcoming four-player title for the for the Nintendo Switch, looks different enough that it may not scratch your itch for the series’ classic bubble bursting. No matter—it’ll also include the original 1986 version of Bubble Bobble. So, if you’ve only got two players or if you just want to play the classic, you won’t be stuck with Bubble Bobble 4 Friends’ modernized widescreen stages.
Publisher ININ Games’ announcement shows off a screenshot of the arcade mode in action. It looks both faithful to the original’s aspect ratio and it sports some big Bubble Bobble-themed borders around the edges.
Getting your hands on older versions of Bubble Bobble isn’t too hard—the NES version was available through the Nintendo eShop for the 3DS and Wii U, and it shipped on the NES Classic Edition—but the arcade version is a bit rarer. If you just want the arcade version and don’t have a Switch (or enough space for a genuine cabinet), Hamster Corporation released an Arcade Archives version of Bubble Bobble for the PlayStation 4 in 2016.
Like the original, Bubble Bobble 4 Friends is being developed by TAITO Corporation. The core four-player experience features Bub and Bob alongside two new bubble dragons, Peb and Pab. 3D graphics and roomier stages aside, it looks like Bubble Bobble 4 Friends will feature a few more boss fights than the classic game.
Bubble Bobble 4 Friends will be released for the Switch (and only the Switch, for now) in Europe on November 19, and a United States release will come in the first quarter of 2020. Just think of the delay as extra time to find the perfect Bob to your Bub… or the Pab to your Peb, if need be.
