Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Datamine Indicates Some Classic Maps May Return

The latest Modern Warfare is a reinvention of the series, bringing its current-day conflicts back to Call of Duty. But it looks like some relics of the past linger, as a datamine leak indicates some classic Modern Warfare locales will return.

Posted to the Modern Warfare subreddit, a list of 38 multiplayer maps supposedly coming to Modern Warfare was leaked, and they include some real gems. Shipment and Rust are the most recognizable as some of the most chaotic maps in Call of Duty history.

Others include Crash and a few renamed maps that might be hints to other, past maps. Layover, for instance, could be a revision of Terminal, and TV Station might be a made-over Broadcast. Call of Duty maps don’t always have the ubiquitous names that you can pull from other games, where they get more standout titles like Sidewinder, Facing Planets, and de_dust2, but most COD4 players remember their first time playing a max player count deathmatch on Shipment.

Also teased in the leak are some Gunfight maps, adding some locales like Pripyat’s Exclusion Zone to Modern Warfare’s surprisingly compelling 2v2 deathmatch mode. There are also hints pointing toward another training course, like the timed ranges in COD4 and Modern Warfare 2.

In our review of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s resurrection, the maps were a notable point of friction in the game’s multiplayer. Massive locales can frustrate the fun of Modern Warfare, and please, do not get me started on Piccadilly. An injection of maps from the older Modern Warfare games, from an era of really solid map design, could be just what’s needed to make this Modern Warfare’s multiplayer shine like it should.
