Looks like Activision will be celebrating this week. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has enjoyed a hugely successful launch weekend, setting several milestones for both the franchise and the publisher.
According to an Activision press release, Modern Warfare has made more than $600 million worldwide during its first three days on release. This includes sales across all platforms – both physical and digital – and also takes into account the Defender DLC pack. That number makes Modern Warfare the best-selling new triple-A game in 2019, the most successful Call of Duty in this console generation, and the number one top-selling digital opening in Activision history. The game’s takings are more than double the box office opening of Todd Phillips’ Joker movie, which set October and R rated records for films.
That’s not all Activision has to celebrate, however. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare set new records for the highest pre-order numbers and highest three-day digital sales on the PS4. It’s also the most successful Call of Duty PC launch ever, enjoying significantly higher sales than last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. This continues the franchise’s sales hot streak after Black Ops 4 performed very well despite its lack of a single-player campaign. Activision president Rob Kostich says Modern Warfare has more total players and more total hours across its first three days than “any Call of Duty opening release in the last six years”.
You can grab Call of Duty: Modern Warfare right now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. After last year’s Black Ops 4 had no single-player component, Modern Warfare arrives with a fully-formed single-player story mode. Activision and developer Infinity Ward plan to support the game post-launch with a raft of free content, which will sit alongside its Battle Pass.
