Check Out This Super Mario Maker 2 Course From the Yooka-Laylee Developers

To celebrate the release of Playtonic Games’ new title, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, Nintendo is spotlighting a course from the developer in Super Mario Maker 2—though it’s not apparent if you just boot up the game and go to Course World.

Nintendo of America gave Playtonic a shout-out via Twitter and showed off a clip of the course in question, “The Impossible Layer” (decent pun, Playtonic folks). Unfortunately, Nintendo hasn’t cooked up a more convenient way to access the course. You’ve got to enter the Course ID (XHK-NB8-11H) just like regular Super Mario Maker 2 courses.

The course, uploaded to Playtonic audio designer Matt Griffin’s account, involves switching back between day and night variants of the same forest environment. Griffin says fellow Playtonic developers Gavin Price and Hamish Lockwood provided some help. Since the course is on Griffin’s account, you can find his other courses pretty easily.

Nintendo says it will share more Super Mario Maker 2 courses from other indie developers soon. Players who are active on Twitter have probably already played a ton of inventive and challenging courses from indie developers—curse you, Matt Thorson of Celeste—but the gesture from Nintendo is nice nonetheless.

The most recent patch for Super Mario Maker 2 added online multiplayer with friends, and Nintendo also made a tab in the Leaderboards section of Course World that directs you toward a list of Nintendo’s Official Makers. It’d be great if the indie developer courses were grouped together in a similar fashion, but hey—at least the codes are only nine characters long this time.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Layer, a primarily 2D-spinoff of Playtonic’s first Yooka-Laylee title, came out for the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 8. In his review, our colleague Tom Phillips at Eurogamer says it’s “well worth exploring through.”
