We only learned of Divinity: Fallen Heroes’ existence earlier this year, but now it’ll be a while before we see it again. Today, Divinity series developers Larian Studios and Logic Artists, lead developers on Fallen Heroes, are announcing that development on the title has been put on hold.
“It is with a profound sense of regret that today we announce Divinity: Fallen Heroes has been put on hold,” Larian Studios’ statement reads. “Originally scheduled for a November 2019 release, it has become clear to everyone involved that the game will need far greater development time and resources than are available now to bring it to fruition, in a fun and sustainable way.”
First revealed in March 2019, Divinity: Fallen Heroes was set to be a tactics-focused spin-off from the Divinity: Original Sin RPGs, with a story set after the events of Divinity: Original Sin 2. Logic Artists, developers of the Expeditions series, were approached by Larian Studios with the idea of mixing gameplay from 2013’s Divinity: Dragon Commander with elements established in the Original Sin titles. Larian and Logic did not previously announce a targeted release in November 2019.
As we learned a few months after the announcement of Fallen Heroes, Larian is working on Baldur’s Gate 3. With Divinity: Fallen Heroes on hold, Baldur’s Gate 3 will remain Larian’s main project while Logic Artists will focus “on the third installment of the expeditions series and a new IP of [its] very own.”
Larian Studios has publicly weighed in on stressful, unsustainable development practices in the past. Earlier this year at GDC 2019, Larian founder Sven Vincke gave a presentation that touched on the various problems encountered during the two-year development cycle for Divinity: Original Sin 2.
