In case you missed it, Bethesda Softworks had included a mandatory login to Bethesda.net in the recently released DOOM console ports, as we reported. Understandably, there was quite the backlash from players and fans, which prompted Bethesda to finally release a patch yesterday that adds an option to skip the Bethesda.net login requirement. It also removes the disconnect notification during gameplay. The login should have been optional from the very start, but better late than never. At least now you’ll be able to play these DOOM console ports offline.

While this looked like the worst idea from every possible angle, Bethesda’s intention was to offer rewards to players through the Slayers Club that launched earlier this year as part of the Year of DOOM. The Slayers Club does offer quite a bit of cool rewards, and not just online cosmetics. If you check out Bethesda’s guide for it, you will see there is even a chance to win prizes and merch. You might even get a custom DOOM console, whether PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch. So maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if you logged into Bethesda.net while revisiting the eternal classics.
On the other hand, according to some reports, the DOOM 3 port is excellent, and never had any of these issues regarding the login. Speaking of DOOM 3, you might want to check out our comprehensive breakdown of its design.
