The massively multiplayer game Fallout 76 is finally offering private worlds, but they’re coming with a price tag attached. Fallout 1st is a new “premium membership” that will include private worlds, exclusive items, and special bonuses for either $12.99 a month or $99 for a full year.
Fallout 1st’s biggest selling point is the incorporation of private worlds, or instances of the massive game world that you can own and operate, separate from public servers. Private worlds are coming to the game via Fallout 1st, though the size might not be what most are looking for: Bethesda says “eight total people per private world” for adventures through devastated West Virginia, or you could go it solo, if that’s something that appeals to you.
The plus is that only the owner of the private world has to be a Fallout 1st member to host a private world, and the world will stay active even after the host leaves so long as one other player in the world is a Fallout 1st member. So maybe not quite the Minecraft server behemoth some might have hoped for. Bethesda says private worlds will evolve over time with expanded building areas, increased C.A.M.P. budgets, and Workshop persistence, and that mod support is something the studio is excited to add in the future.
Alongside a private world, there are some extra resources and goodies being thrown in to sweeten the membership deal. A private Scrapbox, a Survival Tent that can act as a mobile camp, and even a Ranger Armor outfit for the New Vegas fans out there.
While the concept of private worlds is appealing, tying it to a membership subscription seems like a good way to make Fallout 76 players unhappy. It’s a model that eerily mirrors games like Elder Scrolls Online, and it’ll be interesting to see if players embrace this or feel a little spurned by it.
