In Final Fantasy 7, a band of misfits unites to take down a corporation before moving on to save the entire world from annihilation. Somewhere in between, main protagonist Cloud enters a squats contest to win a wig to make himself look pretty. It’s a weird diversion, and you can bet it’s going to be in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Thailand Game Show 2019 recently held a stage event where Final Fantasy 7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase explained why we’ll soon be doing squats in ultra high resolution. “Since we announced the remake, lots of fans have speculated as to how far we would go in reproducing the elements that made the original great,” he says. “We put a lot of care and attention into the cutscenes. But the fans of the original also have strong memories of things like the squats too. So even though they are just little mini games, the development team had a huge motivation to do them properly and remake them in a modern style.”
Indeed, the latest trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Remake (take a look at our breakdown!) shows a scene where Tifa is performing squats and chin-ups in Wall Market’s gym. However, Kitase refers to Final Fantasy 7’s mini games in plural, which makes me think they’re all coming back in an upgraded form.
I’m of two minds about this. I admit I spent hours breeding Chocobos, snowboarding, and playing the motorcycle mini game at the Golden Saucer. But I’ll be fine if certain mini games never show their stupid dolphin-shaped face ever again. Just let Cloud climb the electrified tower that leads to Junon’s upper plate. Yeah, he might get fried. That’s a risk I’m willing to take if I don’t have to jump off a dumb fish’s back ever again.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake is coming to PlayStation 4 in March 2020. Familiarize yourself with our Final Fantasy 7 Remake guides in the meantime.
