A new global mental health charity launches today to help tackle issues around gaming and mental wellbeing. The charity is called Safe In Our World and it’s launching to commemorate World Mental Health Day.
According to a press release, Safe In Our World’s mission is to “[raise] awareness of mental health issues among gamers and creators”. Over 50 percent of the world’s population now plays video games, and one in four people globally are affected by mental health issues, according to Safe In Our World. The initiative therefore wishes to support gamers struggling with mental health problems around the world.
Safe In Our World also wants to destigmatize the discussion surrounding mental health and gaming. The charity is supported by “industry luminaries, veterans, and ambassadors across the world”, and wishes to create an online platform for gamers to read stories, gain access to resources, and seek help for whatever issues they may have. The task ahead is “daunting” for Safe In Our World, but the organization is determined to support gamers.
As its first gaming project, Safe In Our World is launching Fractured Minds, a new game from 2017’s BAFTA Young Games Designer award winner Emily Mitchell. 80 percent of all profits from Fractured Minds will be split between a private fund for Emily and support for Safe In Our World initiatives. According to the charity, Fractured Minds depicts Emily’s “personal journey through mental health issues” and aims to reflect the positive impact gaming can have on the lives of gamers. The game will be published by Wired Productions and will launch for PC and consoles “soon”. It’ll set you back a mere $1.99. There won’t be a physical release, but you’ll be able to pick up Fractured Minds on digital platforms.
