One of the largest MOBAs in the world is coming to new platforms. Announced during today’s 10th anniversary broadcast celebration, League of Legends: Wild Rift will bring the five-versus-five fight for Nexus dominance to both mobile and consoles sometime next year.
While it’s very similar to League of Legends in broad strokes, Wild Rift isn’t a copy-paste port of League of Legends. It won’t have all the same champs and skins as the PC version-several favorites, like Braum, Malphite, Garen, Annie, Lux, and Ashe were shown in Riot’s reveal, but Wild Rift’s official site confirms 40 will make the cut for launch, with more to follow.
League of Legends: Wild Rift will also have a new control scheme to adapt to touch screens and dual-thumbstick controls. Much like other mobile MOBAs like Arena of Valor, you’ll be able to play with just your thumbs. The matches will also be shorter, so no massive slugfests to drain your battery.
This newly mobile League of Legends will be free-to-play, and all champions can be earned without paying real-world money. There will be skins however, but no monetization scheme has been announced just yet. It will not, however, be cross-platform with the PC version.
Limited alphas and betas are rolling out through the end of this year, with plans to be live in all regions by the end of 2020. You can pre-register for the mobile version on Wild Rift’s site right now, and as for the console version, Riot Games hasn’t confirmed which specific consoles it means by that. More news is expected sometime in 2020.
