Let’s chart the path of The Witcher franchise: first novels, then some excellent video games, and soon, a TV show starring Henry Cavill that’s starting to look… pretty good? Netflix just released a new trailer for its adaptation of The Witcher alongside the show’s release date, December 20.
Not only does it look like The Witcher might (let’s be cautious here, might) help fill the big-budget fantasy TV void Game of Thrones left in its hurried wake, but it also looks like the show knows what Witcher fans want most: Geralt of Rivia in a bathtub.
Yes, right in the middle of all the trailers’ place-setting and big battle hype-building, we catch a glimpse of Cavill-as-Geralt in a bath. The framing is seemingly too similar to not be a reference to the scene from CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, yet it also doesn’t lean in all the way. Cavill’s tub looks a little bit roomier than the round wooden vessel Geralt hangs his shiny feet over in The Witcher 3 (and which the folks at PC Gamer, bless them, won’t ever let us forget about).
In an interview at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich confirmed there’d be a bathtub scene in the show but declined to say who’d be taking the plunge. Whether you want to take this tub scene as explicit fan service for players of The Witcher 3 (I mean, it’s definitely fan service for Henry Cavill stans), Hissrich’s The Witcher is working off of creator Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels and not the video game series.
December 20 isn’t far off from the premiere date previously thought to have been leaked by Netflix. There’ll be eight episodes in The Witcher’s first season. Coming out so close to the holidays should hopefully let binge watchers do their thing while giving everyone else a window to watch at their own pace without running headlong into spoilers online.
It was a year ago today when we got our first glimpse of Cavill in costume as Geralt. Thank goodness Netflix got Cavill a better wig, and thank goodness someone decided to put him in a tub.
