Though we’ve learned a lot about the story, roster, and costumes of Marvel’s Avengers over the last few months, developer Crystal Dynamics hasn’t shown off much gameplay since showcasing the opening A-Day mission. Now, a new trailer gives a look at some very Destiny-like bits that are core to Marvel’s Avengers, from its hub world to its stat-laced, color-coded gear system.
The trailer’s first half recaps what’s already been shown of Marvel’s Avengers’ story: years after the catastrophic events of A-Day in San Francisco, fledgling superhero Ms. Marvel (a.k.a. Kamala Khan) works to reunite Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, and Black Widow to in order take on the shadowy organization that’s filled the void left by the Avengers. Once the trailer transitions to the Avengers’ new Helicarrier home base, it’s all about the customization options and core loop of Marvel’s Avengers.
As Mike was shown after his hands-on preview at PAX West 2019, Marvel splits its activities into two main types: solo Hero story missions designed around specific characters, and cooperative Warzone missions that can be played with any character. The gear and skill unlocks you collect will carry over between the two.
On its surface, with both types of missions launching from the very Tower-esque Helicarrier hub, the loop of Marvel’s Avengers looks a whole lot like Destiny’s. Do activities, collect gear, customize your build, rinse, repeat. At PAX West, Crystal Dynamics’ head of studio Scot Amos promised that, for all the rarity tiers, gear ratings, and skill trees, each playable Avenger will still feel distinctly like that character.
All of this customizability won’t impact the way your Avengers roster looks, as costumes you find will be purely cosmetic—to support Marvel’s Avengers’ post-launch content plans, Crystal Dynamics also intends to sell some exclusive costumes. Marvel’s Avengers is set to release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC on May 15, 2020.
