Nintendo released the Switch Lite on September 20, and within 11 days it sold 1.95 million units worldwide. That’s helped push lifetime sales of Switch hardware past 41 million units since the original system’s launch in March 2017.
In its recent earnings release, Nintendo also reported strong launches for first-party Switch games. All three of Nintendo’s major titles for the past quarter joined the Switch’s shortlist of million-plus sellers: Super Mario Maker 2 (3.93 million sold), Fire Emblem: Three Houses (2.29 million), and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (3.13 million). All together, the Switch saw a 36.7% increase in hardware sales and a 38.8% increase in software sales over the same period from April through September of last year.
For context, this means Nintendo’s now sold over three times as many units of Switch hardware as it did Wii U consoles. Since launching in late June, Super Mario Maker 2 is already a few thousand units shy of surpassing the sales of the original Super Mario Maker for the Wii U.
Nintendo’s not revising its earnings forecast for the coming period. With Ring Fit Adventure and Luigi’s Mansion 3 having launched already—the latter is out today, Gooigi fans—and Pokemon Sword and Shield plus Animal Crossing: New Horizons still to come, Nintendo’s likely looking at a strong holiday season and start to 2020.
The Switch still has a long way to go if it’ll ever catch up to the Wii, Nintendo’s best-selling home console of all time at 101.6 million units (a milestone the PS4 just surpassed). Still, the Wii was Nintendo’s flagship system from 2006 to 2012. The Switch has only been out for about two-and-a-half years and it’s pretty close to the halfway mark in sales. Once we’re through the winter, we’ll have a better idea of how much the Switch Lite—“the portable revision that the Switch desperately needed,” according to Mike—can juice Nintendo’s sales, along with the aid of a buff dragon and some mainline Pokemon titles.
