It’s been a big week for Pokemon Sword and Shield previews. We’ve learned more about how tutorials work in the game, as well as what it’s like to explore the open Wild Area. A new tidbit about the Wild Area’s size was recently revealed as well. According to The Pokemon Company, it’s approximately the size of two areas in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Metro UK posted the measurement in its Pokemon Sword and Shield preview. Granted, it’s a vague comparison: I suppose a better measurement would be “Not enormous, but still pretty big.” Breath of the Wild is one of the biggest open world games on the market, so I wouldn’t really expect Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Wild Area to match it. At the same time, it probably takes a bit of time to cross on foot. Riding Pokemon is the best part of Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee, and I hope the option to ride is back in Sword and Shield.
A good follow-up question to The Pokemon Company’s statement is, “OK, but which two Breath of the Wild areas are we talking about, here?” Some parts of Hyrule are larger than others. Death Mountain is ginormous compared to the Akkala Highlands, and the Gerudo Desert dwarfs the Great Plateau.
We’ll be able to measure Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Wild Area down to the last pixel when it comes out on November 15. In the meantime, be sure to thumb through our Pokemon Sword and Shield guides for everything you need to know before—and after—launch.
