Is there anything more endearing than game developers praising one another? I think not. In an interview with Famitsu (translated via DualShockers), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai offered his feelings on Death Stranding. The title is the first from veteran director Hideo Kojima after his departure from Konami.
Sakurai was unprepared for what Death Stranding was, because he mostly avoids reading about or watching trailers for games before he plays them. He found that he was losing track of his time while playing Death Stranding, time that normally would’ve been spent on feeding the Smash beast.
[Sakurai] was initially anxious that the game could be too easy because of the help of other players online. This turned out to be needless fear because unless you reach an objective yourself and connect it to the Chiral network, you won’t get any help. Sakurai also noted how rare it is for a game to mix this well its new possibilities, its story, and its gameplay.
Sakurai, who will never be free of Smash, was impressed that Kojima and his team were able to make Death Stranding in such a short period of time. He called the game’s setting a new world for players.
That said, the Smash director did have a few complaints. He notes that the text and UI was a bit too small to read. Kojima Productions has previously heard this feedback and is releasing a patch this month that will amend the text size. Sakurai also said that Death Stranding relies too much on button-hold commands.
In between playing all this Death Stranding, Sakurai was likely working on the latest character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Terry Bogard.
