Sony Europe Reportedly Lays Off Dozens of Employees Amid Restructuring

The PlayStation 5 was officially confirmed yesterday, but on the precipice of a new console generation, it looks like more restructuring is underway at Sony. According to reports and social media accounts, Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe received news that several divisions would be restructured, leading to “dozens” of staff put up for redundancy.

Video Games Chronicle reports that SIEE was informed yesterday in London, and affected employees were given notice or had meetings set for them to re-interview for their jobs.

The U.S.-based creative services team also saw layoffs, according to one tweet from a former employee. “This group of talented & passionate people are out of a job & now #lookingforwork,” they wrote.

We reached out to PlayStation for comment, but did not hear back by publication.

With the recent departure of Shawn Layden alongside this new bout of restructuring, Sony is seeing a fair bit of turnover headed into the next console cycle. Considering the PlayStation 5 is on its way for a holiday 2020 release, this could be prep for a new generation.

A report from GameDailyBiz recently shed light on some nervousness around Sony’s next-gen efforts; one source anonymously told them that the global restructuring is “exponentially exacerbating” the transition process. Microsoft, meanwhile, seems geared up for a fight in the next generation. We’ll see how it pans out.
