If you find it hard to pick a favorite game that Hidetaka Miyazaki has directed, you’re not alone. Miyazaki himself was just asked to pick a favorite, and though he says he loves his Souls games and Sekiro, Miyazaki went with Bloodborne.
Talked about his fondness for Bloodborne and more with GameSpot Brazil’s Pedro Scapin. According to a summary from Twitter user Nibel, a reliable source for translated bits of industry news, Miyazaki says Bloodborne is his favorite despite acknowledging that more could’ve been done with the Chalice Dungeons and Blood Gems. Of the bosses from Miyazaki’s various games, he says the Old Monk fight from Demon’s Souls still ranks as his favorite.
“At that time, this was not a common system, so I received some criticism and warnings,” says Miyazaki (translated via Google Translate), but the battle was well-received by fans. Sadly, the Old Monk fight is gone along with the Demon’s Souls servers.
As for a sequel to Bloodborne, Miyazaki adds he isn’t “the one to decide.” Like Demon’s Souls before it, Bloodborne was developed by FromSoftware but published by Sony, meaning Sony retains the Bloodborne IP.
A Bloodborne sequel wouldn’t be out of the question given the game’s performance. As the first title in a brand new IP, Bloodborne did quite well for Sony and FromSoftware, as it surpassed Sony’s sales expectations a few months after its March 2015 release and crossed the 2 million unit threshold worldwide by September that year.
After releasing the not so Souls-y Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice with Activision earlier this year, Miyazaki and FromSoftware are working on Elden Ring. FromSoftware will publish Elden Ring through Bandai Namco Entertainment, its publishing partner for the Dark Souls games.
