The chaos of landing on foreign planets and slaughtering armies of bugs is getting a little more controlled next year. Slitherine Games and developer The Aristocrats are working on an adaptation called Starship Troopers: Terran Command, due out sometime in 2020.
Terran Command seems to take after popular PvE strategy games from the past few years like They Are Billions by focusing on managing a small number of forces against an ever-expanding horde. You can lead the troopers into battle in the deserts of distant planets, or set up a defensive line, using your advanced technology like mechs and jets to stave off the insect masses.
While games like Helldivers and Earth Defense Force have utilized the same campy mix of alien blasting and propaganda-fueled fervor that Starship Troopers made popular, this is the real deal. The use of a strategic, overhead point-of-view to command troops, rather than weather the storm as one soldier, adds an interesting twist to the gameplay. You can see how it pans out in a gameplay reveal trailer below:
If you’re an avid fan of the late ’90s cheese-fest that is Starship Troopers and haven’t been sated by other offerings, well, maybe this will do the trick. It won’t be out for a while, but a Twitch stream today with the developers expanded a little bit on their vision for the game, including branching choices on what kind of technology to research and invest in. The alien hordes won’t arrive until 2020, but the extra footage and info from the stream should be enough to tide you over.
