The Analogue Pocket is Bringing Retro Handheld Gaming Back to Life



Analogue, makers of premium, HD-ready retro gaming hardware like the Mega Sg and Super Nt, are readying their first handheld device. The Analogue Pocket looks like a modern take on a Game Boy Pocket, but early details on the system reveal that it supports games from the entire Game Boy family. When paired with the appropriate adapters, the Pocket will support Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, and Atari Lynx titles as well.

Design publication Wallpaper* released the first look at the Analogue Pocket. In addition to showing off the Pocket’s look and multi-system support, Wallpaper* confirms that the system has a rechargeable USB-C battery, stereo speakers, and mappable buttons. The Pocket will also come preloaded with some form of Nanoloop, the line of music sequencer software designed for use with Game Boy and Game Boy Advance hardware.

A preview of the device from Fast Company gives more specifics on the Pocket’s hardware specs. The Pocket can be used with a dock (sold separately) that has an HDMI out, allowing you to play on a television with USB or Bluetooth 8bitdo controllers. The LCD screen on the Pocket is 3.5 inches and supports a 1600×1440 resolution. That’s ten times the horizontal and vertical pixel measures of the original Game Boy’s display.

Analogue’s official website confirms that the Pocket has two Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), allowing developers to develop and port their own cores to the system via microSD. Like Analogue’s other systems, using FPGA cores allows for compatibility updates and eliminates the need to produce specially designed chips for the system or source original hardware components, as Analogue did with its original Analogue Nt NES system. That said, the Pocket does include include a Game Boy link port—and, most importantly, a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Analogue Pocket will cost $199.99 USD and will be released in 2020. Analogue has yet to announce prices or release windows for the Pocket’s dock and adapters.
