Following reports of a delay, Director Neil Druckmann has announced that Naughty Dog is delaying the release of The Last of Us Part 2 to May 29, 2020.

Earlier today, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier reported that a delay to spring 2020 was imminent for The Last of Us Part 2. Ahead of Druckmann’s announcement, industry analyst Daniel Ahmad added that the delay would be “a little over 3 months” from the original release date.

It was only a month ago that Sony and Naughty Dog announced February 21, 2020 as the release date for The Last of Us Part 2. On that same day, press were invited to the first hands-on event for The Last of Us Part 2 since the game was revealed in 2016.

“It was just about a month ago when we had our big blowout for the game, letting media play over two hours of it along with debuting our new story trailer and revealing the release date,” writes Druckmann. “The positive response we saw from our community was overwhelming. You can feel the energy among the team members.

“However, it was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality.”

The Last of Us Part 2 now joins an increasingly crowded spring 2020 release schedule. With the release of the PlayStation 5 set for Holiday 2020, The Last of Us Part 2 is coming out almost as close to the launch of a new PlayStation console as the original game did on the PlayStation 3.
