The Legend of Heroes Makes Its Switch Debut with Trails of Cold Steel 3

It seems no role-playing game is too massive for the Nintendo Switch. Over the past year we’ve seen The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition, and now, Falcom’s Trails series is debuting on Nintendo’s handheld.

The RPG developer confirmed to Gamespot that The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 3 will be landing on the Nintendo Switch in Spring 2020 for the west, with a Japan launch at a later date. Cold Steel 3 has already been out for the PlayStation 4 for a while, but this marks the series’ first entry on a Switch.

When we asked Nihon Falcom’s president Toshihiro Kondo about whether more of Falcom’s games would be coming to the Nintendo handheld hybrid in July, Kondo was eager but noted the studio’s unfamiliarity with the platform.

“In Japan when this question comes up, it always, we get this weird thing where it’s like ‘Falcom doesn’t want to work on Switch,’ or ‘Falcom doesn’t like Switch,’ or something,” Kondo said. “And that’s not… The plain and simple truth of it all is that we just don’t have the knowhow and the ability to be able to work on Switch games right now.”

Gamespot reports that the Nintendo Switch version of Trails of Cold Steel 3 will run at 720p and 30 fps in both docked and handheld modes, and come included with all the game’s DLC. It’s a little odd that the third game is arriving without any of the other Cold Steel games, considering their long lineage and narrative through-lines, but at least the Nintendo Switch is getting another fairly solid and lengthy RPG to dive into. Now if I can only chunk out some time to play it, in what’s becoming an increasingly stacked 2020.
