A new battle royale is out today, but it’s not about guns and shooting. It’s The Eliminator, Forza Horizon 4’s new battle royale mode that’s all about outrunning the competition in increasingly souped-up automobiles.
The Eliminator comes as part of a free update tomorrow, Dec. 12, for Forza Horizon 4 on Xbox One and PC. It’s cosmetically similar to other battle royales, only a bunch of Mini Coopers drop onto the map, and instead of shooting each other, you race each other to get to the top 10 podium for one last race.
Up to 72 players can compete at the same time, and as you zip around the map, you can challenge other players to races in order to eliminate them and find Car Drops of higher level vehicles. Of course, there is a circle, but rather than doing damage it adds to a cumulative time-out bar. Stay outside long enough, and you’ll get dropped out.
Once you hit the top 10, one final race takes place, and it becomes a free-for-all for the finish. The open world of Forza Horizon 4, mixed with the wide spread of cars available, actually makes for a pretty interesting take on the battle royale concept. YouTube channel Easy Allies posted a pretty good look at how a match plays out when the announcement went live today.
I’m all for this continuing trend of battle royales that aren’t all about shooting and guns. Tetris 99 feels like the proof of concept, and now Forza Horizon 4 looks to carry on the torch of clever twists on massive, last-player-standing competition. It doesn’t hurt that Forza Horizon 4’s a pretty solid racing game, and it’s on Game Pass too, so you can take a spin through The Eliminator pretty easily. Hopefully this is the sign of more unique battle royales to come.
