The Witcher premieres on Netflix later this week, following the tales of Geralt of Rivia. When the show launches, it’ll be sticking to storylines from Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels.

Speaking to Inverse, The Witcher showrunner Lauren Hissrich stated that “we’re going to stick to the book” when asked if the show would adapt storylines from CD Projekt’s trilogy of games.

“The games are amazing, but they’re also an adaptation of the books,” Hissrich continued. “I don’t think the TV show in any way needs to compete with the games. They can stand on their own,” she added.

The Witcher on Netflix is an adaptation of Sapkowski’s book series, which also served as the basis for the video games of the same name. It stars Henry Cavill, who was initially considered an odd pick for the role of Geralt of Rivia, but has lately enjoyed a better reception.

The Witcher launches on Netflix with eight episodes on December 20. Hissrich recently announced that The Witcher has already been renewed for a second season, which begins filming in 2020.
