Valheim is all about defeating Odin’s enemies in Viking purgatory. As an open-world game, it offers plenty of opportunity for hilarious hijinks and creative construction from its dedicated fans. There’s always something interesting going on in the game’s community, so let’s check out the latest stuff from the last week!
This Week in Valheim News
This week, we had a tiny patch and a rather silly April Fool’s joke that’s much more real than you think. Here’s the Valheim news for March 27–April 3, 2021!
Valheim Update 0.148.7 Makes Minor Tweaks
Iron Gate couldn’t help but put out some kind of tiny update this week. Sadly, Valheim Update 0.148.7 was pretty small in scope; here’s what changed in this week’s patch:
- Localization updates
- Added separate walk-sneak snow footstep sfx
- Music update (fixed some sound glitches)
- Credits updated (Changed the look of the credits screen & added missing names)
- Hammer, Hoe & Cultivator timing & input tweaks (Slightly lower use delay & queued button presses for a smoother experience…just for you)
Less Than One Week to Enter the Spring Competition
As we highlighted in last week’s edition, a Valheim Spring Contest is currently underway with a pretty neat prize: a free copy of the game! However, time is running out, and you only have a few days to enter.
“Hope you’re not forgetting this!” read a tweet from the game’s official account. “You still have a few more days to show us some eggcellent creations, for the chance of winning a free Steam key!”
Iron Gate has announced a new playable race: deer. Of course, it should be noted that this tweet was released on April 1, 2021, so it’s definitely a joke… or is it?
“Introducing deer as a playable species in Valheim!” read the game’s April Fool’s tweet. “What will you name your deerking?”
Here’s the thing, though: this will probably be a reality in a few weeks at most thanks to the game’s growing modding community. As we noted in our very first edition of This Week in Valheim, someone created the “Play As Skeleton” mod which does exactly what it says on the tin. While this mod only works with skeletons for now, it technically has the capability of swapping the player out for any other in-game model. I give it about two weeks at most before someone makes a similar mod that lets you play as a deer thanks to Iron Gate’s amusing April Fool’s joke.
This Week in Valheim Community Creations
The Valheim community is always coming up with cool builds—here are some of the neater community creations we’ve seen in the last week!
The Valheim Race Track
Right you are, Ken! This obstacle course created by YouTuber its leelaaluu and her friends is filled with tight spaces and challenging corners. Of course, the race we see is filled with all of those wonderful multiplayer bugs that we’ve been seeing ever since launch, so it’s a pretty funny experience to watch, too.
The Ruins of Lordaeron
The Ruins of Lordaeron is a well-known place from the Warcraft universe, and now you can see it in this Viking survival game, too. Created by F3Rs, it does a pretty good job of bringing this iconic location to life—check it out for yourself!
It’s surprising that it’s taken this long, but someone has created a real-world diorama based on the art style of Valheim. This super-cool miniature has sparked a fair amount of interest from the community on Reddit, and it’s not her only work, either; you can see some in-progress shots of this particular build (and her other work) on her Instagram.
Live Like the Simpsons
If you’re going to have a home, you may as well model it after a classic—Simpson House is a build that seeks to emulate the home of the classic American sitcom family. One wonders if it happens to have Homer’s safe deposit closet.
This Week in Valheim Mods
Valheim mods are consistently coming out, and some of the new additions (and future attractions) are pretty darn cool.
A Playable Game Boy (No, Really)
Valheim Legends Adds Classes
The Valheim Legends mod (Nexus, Thunderstore) adds a bit more depth to the game with the introduction of classes. Players can choose from Valkyrie, Ranger, Berserker, Mage, Druid, or Shaman—and each class has three unique abilities. Additionally, this mod adds five skills to the game. The only downside is that you have to manually edit some config files to make the most of this mod.
Signs Get a Glow-Up (Literally)
Signs are a little bit boring, aren’t they? Why not take things to the next level with the Advanced Signs mod? Not only does it let you have glowing, colored text—this mod also allows you to change the size of signs, sometimes substantially so.
More Wood Piles, Because Why Not
One of the few downsides of the game is you can’t make wood piles for Core Wood and Fine Wood. That changes with the WoodPiles mod which simply adds these two new building types for players to enjoy.
Valheim Must-See Moments: March 27–April 3, 2021
As an open-world game, Valheim is no stranger to various kinds of craziness from the community—here are the must-see moments for March 27–April 3, 2021!
I Would Walk on Water Just to Be With You
Two-star wolves can be powerful companions in the game; a large enough pack can make quick work of Yagluth, the fifth (and currently final) boss in the game. Apparently, they can also be used as an impromptu boat if you have enough of them, too.
Come On and Slam (and Welcome to the Jam)
We all have our morning rituals. Some of us like to go for a swim. Others like to have a cup of tea. And some people land a sick layup on a basketball court in the middle of their base.
It’s Not Quite an Elevator…
One of the challenges of tall buildings is making your way up and down all of those stairs. One innovative player has created something cool: a simply elegant way to make it back down to the first floor in rapid fashion. Give it a watch!
That’s all we have for This Week in Valheim—see you next week! In the meantime, why not give our list of Valheim guides a read?
