WoW Shadowlands Finally Adds Black and Asian Facial Options for Human Characters

Today during a BlizzCon 2019 panel, World of Warcraft director Ion Hazzikostas highlighted some of the new features coming to the upcoming Shadowlands expansion. Toward the end of the presentation, the director focused on the new base customization options.

Currently in World of Warcraft, there are a limited number of faces for each race. For humans, there’s a set of around 15 generic faces for each of the male and female options. My Human Paladin has one of the male faces with one of the darker skin options, but it doesn’t look quite right. Some players have long asked for options that mirror the faces of real-world Black, Asian, and Hispanic people. It seems like Blizzard has finally listened.

Humans will be able to pick faces that look a bit more like themselves; the image shown on stage had clear Asian and Black facial options. There was also a new natural hairstyle option shown on the black woman face behind Hazzikostas. There’s no indication if these are unique faces or a new face-choosing system like other modern RPGs, but Blizzard will probably tell us more at the Deep Dive panel tomorrow.

Other races will also get more customization options. Hazzikostas showed off the new options for the Trolls and Dwarves, featuring new skin colors, tusks, and tattoos. Eye color will also be separated out so you can pick that individually. Undead can choose if they want their bones sticking out or not, but sadly, no chubby undead.

It’s a fantastic change for World of Warcraft. We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to get the full scope of the additions though. If you want to know more about Shadowlands, we have a full recap of the announcement and the first information panel at BlizzCon 2019. World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is coming to PC and Mac in 2020.
